If having a healthier Thanksgiving is important to you, you’ll want to find a way to incorporate some exercise into your holiday routine. Gyms near you offer a wide range of programs to help you stay active, but you can also find ways to stay fit while you’re traveling to see your loved ones. Here are a few suggestions from the coaches at CrossFit Rock Hill:

  1. Walk – While this may seem obvious, walking is a great way to exercise. You can do it no matter where you are.  Walks can be a lot of fun, especially if you go with your friends and family this Thanksgiving. Take every opportunity to go on a walk this holiday – you’ll notice the difference in how you feel!
  2. The guest room workout – If you’re staying at a loved one’s home this holiday, make sure you pack some of your workout gear. With resistance bands and a yoga mat, you can use any room you stay in as a space for push-ups, squats, and other exercises.
  3. “The Holiday Challenge” – Set a goal for the amount of exercise (or steps) you want to get in over the holiday. While you’re challenging yourself, use this time to invite others to work out with you. It’ll make for a memorable holiday, and you’ll feel healthier, too.

5 Ways to Have a Healthier Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is all about spending time with family and friends as we give thanks for all the blessings we have. But due to the very large and delicious meals that are served, it’s also a time when many of us neglect our usual health habits. As one of the top locations for CrossFit near you, the coaches at CrossFit Rock Hill want to share some ways you can have a healthier Thanksgiving this year without sacrificing all of your tasty holiday traditions:

  1. Greet, meet, and walk. Get up from the couch or the table to interact with your family while you wait for the dinner to be served. Try to move as much as you can throughout the day.
  2. When you’re full, stop! Instead of stuffing yourself this Thanksgiving, focus on eating reasonable-sized portions of food. Once you’re full, stop eating – don’t push yourself overboard!
  3. Walk after the feast. Take a nice walk with your family after the meal. This is a great way to spend time with the people you love while getting some exercise.
  4. Clean up together. Not only is this a great way to show appreciation to your hosts, it’s also a great way to work off some extra calories!
  5. Next day morning workout – Whether it’s on your own or with a few of your friends and family, take the time to get some exercise the day after Thanksgiving. Take a long walk or run, go hiking, or try some CrossFit exercises to work off the pumpkin pie.

Is CrossFit Dangerous?

There’s a lot of misinformation out there about just about any exercise program you can think of. Unfortunately, the same can be said for CrossFit. Many people who are new to CrossFit wonder whether it’s dangerous. Here at CrossFit Rock Hill, we want everyone to feel 100 percent comfortable with our exercise programs. While we believe CrossFit can work for everyone, there are some instances where this type of workout may not be ideal for you.

CrossFit is not a solo sport. If you’re committed to working out on your own, this may not be the best option for you. Our training can be tough at first, but many people find they can accomplish amazing things through the encouragement of others in the gym. Additionally, you’ll need a certified coach to show you the correct way to safely perform the different exercises and a spotter to make sure you don’t get hurt.

The goal is to push yourself to a safe limit. We believe you’ll experience the greatest growth when you push your limits and try to conquer obstacles. However, if you push yourself too hard or too fast, you might end up hurting yourself. This is no different from any other exercise program. Of course, if you have health concerns, it’s best to consult with your physician and one of our trainers before you start working out with us.

At CrossFit Rock Hill, we want you to feel both comfortable and welcome when you start your training at our gym in Rock Hill. We believe that one of the best ways to make our new students feel at ease is by sharing common CrossFit terms that our personal trainers and other students use during their workout sessions. Here are ten things you might hear if you train at a CrossFit near you:

  1. GPP (General Physical Preparedness): Your general physical fitness.
  2. BW (Body Weight):  This stands for your current body weight.
  3. PR (Personal Record): Your own personal record as you progress from one training session to the next.
  4. Rep: Stands for one repetition of an exercise.
  5. Set: This is the number of repetitions you do in a workout.
  6. AMRAP (As Many Rounds/Reps As Possible): Perform as many reps as you’re able at your current skill level.
  7. CFWU (CrossFit Warm Up): The first exercises you do at a CrossFit session.
  8. EMOM (Every Minute On the Minute): Perform a certain exercise at the start of each minute for a certain number of minutes.
  9. BS (Back Squat): Rest the weight on your back while you perform a squat.
  10. FS (Front Squat): Perform a squat with the weight in front of you.
